History

  • As early as 1894, The President Founder of the Theosophical Society, Col. H.S.Olcott, pioneered a movement for the education of the most underprivileged sections of society by establishing several Panchama (Harijan) schools in and around Madras (Chennai). The teachers were Theosophists who had rejected the system of caste and untouchability. After Co. Olcott’s death in 1907, the Theosophical Society’s main school for the underprivileged was renamed in his honour as the Olcott Memorial School.

  • The Theosophical society, which is sponsoring this educational work, is a non-sectarian, non-political, non-profit making international organization of more 110 year standing. It stands for the equality of the human being without distinction of caste, creed, colour, sex, social and economic position. It seeks to lend dignity to the human citizen irrespective of social status.
