History

Started by Poojya Gurudev, Swami Chinmayanandaji, Chinmaya Vidyalayas are schools with a difference. Gurudev, who recognized the power of youth, believed that education should be holistic, His vision was translated in the form of various Chinmaya Vidyalayas across the country. The Vidyalayas function under the auspices of the Central Chinmaya Mission Trust (CCMT), Mumbai. The three Chinmaya Vidyalayas in Chennai are managed by management committees, the members of which are drawn from the trustees of Chennai, Madras Chinmaya Seva Trust and Chinmaya Mission, Chennai. Swami Tejomayanandaji, the spiritual head of Chinmaya Mission worldwide, is our patron.

The Vidyalayas follow the pattern of 10 + 2 and is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, Delhi. This co-educational English medium school follows the same syllabus and curriculum followed by Kendriya Vidyalyas

The Chinmaya Vidyalaya has as its emblem, the lamp and the, ‘Hamsa’ bird. In the light of the Scriptures (represented by the lamp) the discriminative power of the human intellect is to be developed (represented by the Hamsa bird). Vedic tradition describes Hamsa as a bird that can drink milk alone from a solution of milk and water. The human intellect with its discriminative power must be able to discriminate between spirit and matters and must come to enjoy the Spiritual Essence in the world of names and forms. Thus the emblem indicates that the function of the Mission is to help people in developing ethical values and cultivating in them a discriminative intellect

History

Sri Sankara School, as it was then known, owes its inception to the inspiration provided by The Paramacharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. It was inaugurated on June 21, 1970 under the auspices of the Oriental Cultural Education Society, a subsidiary unit of the Vyasa Bharatha Kaladi Sadas Samajam, a registered body founded by His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Sankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam by Sri. V. Vaidyasubramania Iyer, a well known philanthropist, on the land gifted by him, and situated in R.A. Puram, Chennai. The first Annual Report presented by Sri. S.K. Sivaraman, the then Joint Secretary of the Managing Committee acknowledges with deep gratitude the fact that “the School owes its inception to the inspiration of His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Sankaracharya Swami of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, and that His blessings have been its greatest moral asset all along”.

In 1972, The Indian Education Society was formed to take over the assets and liabilities and also the Management of Sri Sankara School. The Managing Committee of the Society negotiated the purchase of the Vasantha Press Building from the Theosophical Society. This is where the Adyar School is now located. Sri. P.R. Pattabiraman, the first General Secretary, was responsible for finalizing the purchase of the land and building in Adyar from The Theosophical Society. He was instrumental in guiding the affairs of the School during its formative years successfully.

The Committee was reconstituted in 1977 with Sri. R. Venkataraman (Past President of India) as the President of the Governing Body and Justice Krishnaswami Reddiar as the Vice President. When Sri. R. Venkatraman, laid down office on his joining the Union Cabinet Sri K.S. Narayanan took over. The student strength during the Academic Year 1977–78 was 394 (Incidentally the current strength is 1984). It was in 1981 that the first batch of students was sent to take the XII Standard examination.

In 1981, the Indian Education Trust took over the Management of the School from the Society. Sri. K.S. Narayanan took over as the Chairman of the Trust. In addition to the Chairman, the Board consists of Sarvashri S. Venkataraman , V.L. Dutt, V. Narayanan, N. Sankar, Dr. V. Balasubramaniam, V. Vaidyanathan , V.S. Dhandapani (Managing Trustee) and N.Kumar(Treasurer).

In 1988 the Trust was allotted land at Tiruvanmiyur for starting another School, and in 1989, Sri Sankara Vidyasramam, run on the Matriculation pattern was started with 315 students. The first batch of students from the School took the Higher Secondary Examination (Plus two) in 1994. The current strength of the School is 1610.

Both the schools have had dedicated and efficient Principals all these years. At Adyar, Sri. T.R. Meenakshisundaram was at the helm from 1977 to 1993 and was responsible for putting the school on a firm foundation. He was followed by Sri S.R.Santhanam (1993-97) and Mrs. Ramaa Swaminathan (1997-2004). Mrs. Subala Ananthanarayanan took over in 2004.

At Tiruvanmiyur, Sri T.R. Meenakshisundaram was holding additional charge till 1992 when Mrs. Vasantha Balasubramaniam took over as Principal. When she resigned on health grounds in 2000, Mrs. Kalpalatha Mohan was made the Principal.

The Adyar School has the distinction of being one of the first schools in the city to offer Biotechnology as a subject at the plus two level. At the Tiruvanmiyur School, Biochemistry is now offered at the plus two level.
